11. School: General Information and Academic Administration
Before
we start our activity at the school, the university organize opening ceremony
for welcoming the participants of batch 7 SEA-Teacher program. On that
activity, the principal from education college give us some motivation,
instruction and learning system of University of Santo Tomas.
On
first day we went to the UST Junior High School, I met my cooperating teacher named
Frederic Roy Manubay. After that, I did my first observed on grade 9 the
section St. Cecilia and St. Cornelius.

Building
The
UST JHS was formally founded in 1928 as a laboratory school for student
teachers, opening its doors to 110 male students on june 6, 1928 with Fr.
Silvestre Sancho, O.P. as Director and Dr. Rafael Acosta as Principal. UST JHSis
located in Sampaloc, Manila, Philippines. More precisely, it is located at
Benavides Building University of Santo Tomas. It is one of the high school
departments of the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

The mission of the UST Junior High
School is to prepare students for Senior High School, to form them in faith,
and to mold them with the identities of a true Thomasian – competent,
committed, and compassionate, dedicated to serve God, the nation and the global
community.
Our mission is defined by the
following goals:

Cultivation of Christian values
necessary for the formation of a right social conscience;
3. Development of professional sound
expertise in guiding, counseling, and nurturing our students’ passion for
knowledge;
4. Appreciation, preservation,
enrichment, and propagation of Filipino cultural heritage rooted in a sense of
history and tradition;
5. Recognition of the role of
individuals in the University, local, community, country, and the environment.

Objectives
It is the aim of the UST Junior High
School:
1. To mold the students into total
human persons by providing them the best educational program possible in an
atmosphere conducive to intellectual, spiritual, moral, social, cultural, and
physical development.
2. To provide the students with the
necessary education in order that they may become well-disciplined persons
whose deportment is in harmony with Christian ideals and teachings.
3. To help the students develop a sense
of Christian leadership and service whose primary concern is the welfare of
others.
4. To cultivate in the students a genuine
and fervent nationalist sense.
5. To provide the adolescent students
an all-around, sound, balanced and challenging curriculum, not only suited to
their talents and abilities, but also determined to bring out the best in them
and make them responsible adults in the future.
Teaching System
UST Junior High School has only one
level of education, Junior High School level, which starts from grade-7 to grade-10.
The classes that I used as practicum objects are 9th grade students
specifically in St. Cecilia and St. Cornelius.
The UST Junior School using the
Brain Based Learning System. The system are they had same schedule for Monday
until Friday. The subject are math, social science, science, english and
Filipino. Especially, for science be shared depend on the grade are earth
science for grade-7, biology for grade-8, chemistry for grade-9 and physic for
grade-10. The distribution had a lot of advantages that the student be able to
learn the subject based on the difficulty rating on every grades and the same
schedule can help students to remember, to understand and to apply the lesson
given by the teacher.
Time per lesson hour for each day is adjusted
for each segment. 1 hour of study lasts for 25 minutes. For Chemistry subjects,
one meeting lasts for 3 hours (3x25 minutes). The school's start at 07.00
a.m., and ends at 4 p.m., but some classes has extension time, which is start
from 04.00 p.m. until 5.30 p.m.
Academic Support System
The facilities of the UST Junior High School are Benavides
Auditorium, 2 Audio-visual Rooms, 2 science laboratories, 3 computer laboratories
with internet services, Robotics room, Drafting room, Library with on-line
services with one audio visual center, Recording room, Canteen, Kitchen, Presentation
room, Simbahayan community development room, Accreditation room, Multi-purpose
room, Coordinators room , Administrators office, 40 multi-media and
air-conditioned classroom, 4 head teachers offices,and 4 guidance and
counseling offices.
UST Campus provides students with
other facilities such as the Tan Yan Kee student center where the Office for
Student Affairs (OSA) is found, the central library, the student health
service, UST museum, Pharmacy Botanical Garden, the Quadricentennial
Park,Quadricentennial Pavilon, Buenaventura Garcia Paredes O.P Building, and
the plaza mayor

CURRICULUM
The structure and content of
curriculum at UST JHS using K to 12 curriculum following
curriculum from Philippines Education's Department. there are six grades for elementary, four grades
for junior high school, and two grades for senior high school. But, since the
UST Junior High School is a private school, they are a little modifying the
concepts from the government, like the distribution of the subject matter. The
UST Junior High School used the Brain Based Learning concepts which is based on
the function and structure of the human brain.
Materials
and Other Learning Sources
The sources of learning that used in the UST
Junior High School are, printed books and e-books in library, and also other
authentic material. The UST Junior High School had LAA (Learning Anytime
Anywhere) Class. For LAA Class, the students had tablet by their own. The
tablet is uses for learning procces so they have to install any important
application likes E-books, schedule app, application for assessment (Kahoot,
ThatQuiz, QR scanner, etc.), application for improve english (Meriam webster,
oxford dictionary, filipino-english dictionary), and many application more. The
LAA Class be supported by servicer so probably they are had problem with the
tablet or the tablet be lost the servicer will help them. They also uses
internet as their resources.
